The beginning of the film pits Ellison with actor/comedian Robin Williams as Williams runs by a list of 'rumors' about Ellison as he debunks or confirms various 'facts' (he actually did send a dead rodent to a publisher via fourth-class mail). They also shock and stare at his odd behaviors, confused by Ellison's biting words and contemptuous, off-putting demeanor. The documentary is brimming with interviews with other sci-fi writing legends, renowned novelists and writers, actors and fans of Ellison's work – all who glow in amazement over how easy Ellison makes writing seem. It gives fans a first-hand look at the genesis of this classic writer, but it sidetracks to delve deeper into his darker, and often highly humorous, idiosyncrasies. And that's what producer/director Erik Nelson's documentary, Harlan Ellison: Dreams with Sharp Teeth attempts to explore.

But Harlan isn't just a wonderful writer – he's also an enigmatic, eccentric hothead with an odd contempt for idiocy and ignorance in any form, often lashing out at fans, colleagues, publishers, studios and the Hollywood elite.
